How to Round Off Decimals
Read,3 minutes
Rounding a decimal means replacing it with a nearby number that is easier to use. First identify the place you are rounding to: whole number, tenth, hundredth, thousandth, or another place.
Look one digit to the right of the rounding place. If that digit is \(0,1,2,3,\) or \(4\), keep the rounding digit the same. If it is \(5,6,7,8,\) or \(9\), increase the rounding digit by \(1\). Then replace all digits to the right with zeros or remove them if they are after the decimal point.
Examples
Example 1: Round \(12.463\) to the nearest hundredth. The hundredths digit is \(6\), and the next digit is \(3\). Keep \(6\), so \(12.463\approx 12.46\).
Example 2: Round \(4.987\) to the nearest tenth. The tenths digit is \(9\), and the next digit is \(8\). Rounding up carries through the \(9\), so \(4.987\approx 5.0\).
